What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Similar technologies, such as your browser's local storage and session storage, work in the same way. This policy covers all of them.
How we ask for your consent
- On your first visit, a banner asks whether you allow analytics. Accept all and Reject optional are equally easy, and nothing optional is switched on until you choose.
- Settings in the banner shows each category and lets you choose individually.
- Your choice is remembered for 12 months, after which we ask again.
- You can change or withdraw your consent at any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page. If you withdraw it, the Google Analytics cookies are deleted and analytics stops.

Google Analytics is provided by Google Ireland Limited and loaded through Google Tag Manager. We use it to understand which articles are read and how readers find them. Advertising features are switched off: the banner tells Google that advertising storage, ad personalisation and ad user data are not allowed. Google may transfer data to Google LLC in the United States under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. More information: Google's privacy policy.
Third party services
- Embedded videos. Some articles embed videos from YouTube (Google). YouTube may set its own cookies when such an article is opened. See Google's privacy policy.
- Membership and search. Ghost, the platform this site runs on, loads its membership and search features from the jsDelivr content delivery network (cdn.jsdelivr.net). jsDelivr receives your IP address to deliver these files. It sets no cookies.
- Payments. If you buy a paid membership, payment is handled by Stripe in its own checkout, which sets its own cookies. See Stripe's privacy policy.
Fonts are served from this site. We do not use advertising cookies or social network tracking pixels.
Managing cookies in your browser
Besides Cookie settings, you can delete cookies or block them in your browser settings. Blocking strictly necessary storage may stop sign in or the cookie banner from working correctly. Help pages: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge.
Changes to this policy
If we change the cookies we use, we update this page and its date. If we add a new optional category, the banner asks for your choice again.
